If you’re in Ballarat to see Weathering the Future, it’s well worth the effort to pop into the Art Gallery of Ballarat, where three exquisite exhibitions are on show downstairs.

The Numina Sisters presents astounding, massive paintings from a family of NT artists, and Strange Garden by Eliza-Jane Gilchrist shows what imagination and cardboard can really do.

In the Local Rules: Identity display, district arts look behind the creative mask, and we were chuffed to see one of the works coming from Ben Mangan, the Arts Academy lecturer who oversaw the wonderful digital posters produced by the communication design students for Weathering the Future. Ben also designed our logo.

Also among the gallery’s special exhibitions are shows by Louiseann King and Marlene Gilson.

Congratulations to Jarred Parkinson and Clare Hartigan

Federation University’s Arts Academy launched its end-of-year exhibition at the Mining Exchange last night, and we were stoked to see Jarred Parkinson and Clare Hartigan among the awards line-up.

Jarred won the Australian Graphic Design Association Award, and Clare the Martha Pinkerton Award.  They are two of the 14 final-year students presenting posters at Weathering the Future, and both had their posters among their portfolios on show at the Mining Exchange.

At least one other was spied on the walls, while one of the cubby holes at the exchange has been given over to digital projections of the students’ posters.

The end-of-year show is quite stunning and well worth a look, with some excellent art for sale at very affordable prices. There’s some considerable talent on show, across various media. It runs until Sunday 9 December, and is open daily 10am-3pm.

The full array of printed posters will, of course, be on show at Weathering the Future, which opens on Thursday, with the official launch on Saturday 8 December.
