They Are Us 2020

Following the success of the Weathering the Future exhibition in 2018, Words Out Loud again collaborated with Soldiers Hill Artist Collective on an ekphrastic exhibition.

This time, however, the writers went first.

Twenty writers from the Central Highlands of Victoria, at all stages of career, wrote pieces of poetry and flash fiction on the theme of “They Are Us”.

SHAC artists were randomly chosen to respond to these in a variety of media, including painting, photography, woodwork, weaving and sculpture.

The exhibition ran at the Lounge Gallery, Billy’s Bar and Bistro, Mercure Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre, 613 Main Rd, Ballarat, from 24 February to 5 April 2020.

The exhibition was officially opened on Thursday 27 February at 6.30pm by City of Ballarat deputy mayor Cr Belinda Coates.

Ballarat musician Reuben Morgan composed a piece specifically for the exhibition.

A special thanks to Radmac Office Choice in Ballarat for the generous donation of foam core board on which to display the written works.
