Weathering the Future (2018)

Weathering the Future, an art exhibition in Ballarat, Victoria, incorporated the talents of the Soldiers Hill Artist Collective, Central Highlands writers, and third-year communication design students from Federation University Australia’s Arts Academy.

The project was a dual ekphrastic process in which the artists of SHAC responded to the theme of “Weathering the Future”, looking at the hurdles and innovations we face at the beginning of the Anthropocene. Writers at various stages of career responded to these artworks in flash fiction and poetry. These written works were embodied in text art by the Arts Academy students.

The exhibition ran at Backspace Gallery, Camp St, Ballarat, 6-23 December 2018, with the official launch on Saturday 8 December.

A list of contributors is available, with archived pages of the visual art, text responses and audio also via the dropdown menu.

Weathering the Future was curated by Jason Nahrung, with much-appreciated and invaluable assistance from Kirstyn McDermott, the convenors of Words Out Loud in Ballarat.

The exhibition was made possible by the City of Ballarat’s Backspace Gallery community arts program.
